To be Indian in the world after Second Impact was to be a statistic. An anomaly. With millions dying in the initial floods and quakes, and millions more dying when the nuclear weapons flew, the Indian population of the world consisted mostly of lucky refugees outside major cities (no one on record walked away from the ruins of New Delhi or Mumbai), and immigrants to other countries. With their cultural center gone, their homeland a wasteland in many places (and worse in others), many of the survivors would give in to their fears in later years. The suicide rate in UN Recovery Camp Sector I-A1 (the main complex of refugee camps housing Indian survivors in Asia) was, for many years, well over 50%.

Into this, Naarad Daas was born. His father’s fate unknown (presumed dead in Mumbai while he was still an infant), his mother dead by her own hand before he was six. Like many children in those circumstances, facing an uncertain future. Unlike many, though, he fought.

By day, he attended the (admittedly, poorly funded and badly built) UN Collective School set up in the camp. By night, he would read, into the late hours. He began to be a downright annoyance in the local Facilitator’s offices, making suggestions as to changes that would help the camp. Eventually, just to save on aggravation, they gave him a job.

It was in this place that the NERV Acquisition Team found him. One of the rare children with the talent they needed, and none of the training. They’d been there before. It’d work out. At least this kid was used to hard work.
